Certain citizens of Bulgaria,
Brazil and Romania will now be able to travel to Canada without obtaining a
Temporary Resident Visa (TRV, which is also known by the name 'visitor visa').
A quicker and cheaper process has been put in place for the travel of these
people.
These individuals will now have
to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before they can board a
flight for Canada. This new change in rule will be effective from May 1st
and will be applicable to citizens of these three countries who have traveled
to Canada in the past 10 years and who are having a valid non-immigration
(visitor) visa of United States (US).
Individuals who are not
fulfilling these requirements or are coming to Canada by bus, car, boat or
train, will still need to have a TRV.
Another news update has come out
that the visa requirements for all Bulgarian and Romanian citizens will be
uplifted by Canada starting from December 1, 2017. The Government of Canada has
not announced as to when and will the same policy be implemented for citizens
of Brazil.
This new system was launched back
in August 1, 2015 and till now more than 3.6 million eTAs have already been
issued to travelers who are exempted for applying for visa. This system was
made mandatory in November 2016 for visa-exempt travelers.
Before the introduction of eTA
system, visa-exempt foreign national traveling to Canada were not screened
systematically at the time of admission till the time they are already at the
Canadian Port of Entry.
The change in rules will make it
easy for eligible visitors who are coming to Canada and for transiting through
a Canadian airport. This will also increase the number of visits made by them.
Ahmed Hussen, Canada's Immigration Minister, stated that the change in rules
will increase the travel and tourism and will be economically beneficial for
Canadians.
The Government of Canada is
making changes from all corners to make traveling to Canada easier, be it as a
visitor or to live here permanently.
